Cultivating Belief and Empowerment in Education

In the latest episode of the Embodied Educator Podcast, episode number 45, we were thrilled to host Dr. Zaneta Brown Ingles, an inspiring educator and serial entrepreneur dedicated to transforming the educational landscape. With over two decades of experience, Dr. Ingles continues to impact the lives of students and teachers alike, promoting an educational philosophy rooted in belief, empowerment, and the power of relationships.

A Journey Inspired by Connection Dr. Ingles's journey in education began in her childhood, guided by an influential teacher who mirrored the traits she now embodies in her own practice. This foundational relationship fueled her dedication to education and nurtures her ongoing mission to foster environments where students feel seen, heard, and supported.

Building a Framework for Success A significant portion of our discussion focused on an innovative framework Dr. Ingles has implemented in schools: claim, evidence, reasoning (CER). The CER framework is designed to foster critical thinking and reflection, helping students develop their argumentative writing skills across various subjects. This approach not only prepares students for standardized tests but also cultivates an invaluable skill set for their broader educational journey.

The Power of Environment and Embodiment Dr. Ingles emphasizes the importance of creating a classroom environment where students feel safe and empowered to express themselves. Her insights highlight the challenges and systemic issues within the current educational structure, such as testing environments that can hinder student performance. Through her reflective journaling practice, Dr. Ingles develops actionable strategies to overcome these obstacles, ensuring all students have the opportunity to excel.

Encouraging Student Engagement and Participation Dr. Ingles also shares her commitment to engaging students on a personal level, encouraging them to reflect on how they relate to their reading materials. By making connections between texts and personal experiences, students are more likely to develop a love for reading and improve their literacy skills. Additionally, giving students the opportunity to provide feedback on each other's work fosters a culture of collaboration and accountability, vital components in lifelong learning.

Addressing Modern Challenges and Supporting Students Our conversation also touched on contemporary challenges like vaping and the necessity of parental involvement in education. Dr. Ingles advocates for initiatives like "Parent University," which aims to educate parents on how best to support their children's academic journey and overall well-being.

A Vision for Transformation Dr. Ingles's vision is clear: to cultivate a belief in students that they can achieve anything and to create educational environments that support their growth. By embodying love, hope, and humor, she continues to inspire both educators and students, illuminating the path toward a more equitable and empowering educational landscape. For anyone intrigued by Dr. Ingles's practices or wishing to catch up on this enlightening conversation, you can connect with her via email at ZBrownIngles@gmail.com. Together, let's create a future for education that champions belief, empowerment, and boundless possibilities.
